Master Yang has been actively involved in martial arts almost sixty years. He continues to teach T’ai Chi Ch’uan, Hatha Yoga, Hap ki Do and self defense classes at the University of Texas at El Paso and El Paso Community College, and in Chaparral, New Mexico.
From 1954-1957 Stephen Yang practiced Hwa Soo Do under instructor Sung Je Im using "Hwa Soo Do Kyo Bon", by Hwang Kwan Jang Nim. In 1957, he began his Dang Soo Do training under its founder, Grand Master Kwan Jang Nim, in Seoul, Korea. Yang was conferred his Cho Dan Degree in 1960 at the Moo Duk Kwan School.
From 1965 to 1975, under Grand Master Byung Ock (Edward) Yoon, Yang studied Korean Royal Court Moo Sul (previously called Ho Shin Do), and In Sul (healing techniques). He also studied Hatha Yoga under Dr. In Chul Kim. In 1973, Yang received his 4th Dan Degree Black Belt and his Instructor’s License from the Korea Hap Ki Do Association. In 2006, Master Yang received his Phal Dan Degree Black Belt from the Korea Hap Ki Do Association.
Yang came to the United States (1975) with a charge to begin a Ho Shin Do school (Yoon's Hap Ki Do School); however, he continued with even more training from 1975 to 1989. He studied traditional T’ai Chi Ch’uan, Pa-kua Chang, and Northern Chin Na under Sa Bu Nim Lin in New York City. Concurrently, he studied Mongolian martial arts, healing massage techniques, and Mongolian T’ai Chi Cu’uan from Su Bu Nim Wong Young. Yang then graduated from the Golden Acupressure Therapeutic Massage College in 2001, he registered Qi Gong Acupressure Massage Therapist in 2003.
During his years in New York City, Yang studied Theology at the New York Bible Institute and the Presbyterian Theological Seminary (1976-1986). He was conferred his Master of Divinity Degree in Theology by the Presbyterian Seminary in America. Rather than opening a Hap Ki Do school in the United States, he became an evangelist and, in 1989, returned to El Paso, Texas, to begin his ministry. In 1990, Yang received his ordination from the South-Western Presbytery of the Korean Presbyterian Church of America. Under the authority of Supreme Grand Master Byung Ock (Edward) Yoon (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), he opened the Yoon’s Martial Arts Academy in USA, El Paso, Texas, in 2002.
